Research and Innovation
The Carlos Slim Foundation (FCS), through care models, research, and technological tools, undertakes actions to address the main health and education problems faced by vulnerable populations, especially in Mexico and Latin America. The creation of models based on technology and mobile communication devices is a fundamental tool for this purpose, as they share common characteristics such as innovation, sustainability, and replicability.
The Foundation’s support for innovation in the fields of health, nutrition, and education helps improve people’s and families’ quality of life. By raising the population’s health and education levels, we can enable people to live longer and better lives.
Digital Innovation Center (CID)
Research to Innovate
The Technology and Innovation Center (CTIN) has, for several years, served as a meeting point that fosters the development of scholarship holders through multidisciplinary integration dynamics, where creative, technological, and socially impactful solutions are generated.
Now, it includes a new division: the Digital Innovation Center (CID), created two years ago based on CTIN’s experience.
Promotion of MakerSpace learning-work environments and digital education tools
The CID is made up of a group of scholarship holders whose goal is to identify knowledge and cutting-edge technologies worldwide, along with innovative projects that can be translated into specific improvements for the different companies within Grupo CARSO.
CID acts as a think tank, supporting the digital transformation of these companies by focusing on identifying new trends in areas such as big data and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies are harnessed to improve time and resource optimization, technology platforms, productivity gains, process automation, inventory control, and more. The aim has been to transform Grupo CARSO through these initiatives over the past two years.
Development of new ingredients (microalgae, yeasts)
Currently, CID is working across several areas of Grupo CARSO: technology, health, education, energy, telecommunications, and construction.
In the health sector, the focus is on two main areas:
- A program to maximize data utilization generated from projects to conduct artificial intelligence analyses. Leveraging the vast volume of data generated through MIDO, the program aims to profile the population and gradually personalize potential health interventions.
- Development in Internet of Things (IoT), wearable technologies, and data services.
Additionally, CID is working on a plan to establish a partnership using an existing health app similar to MIDO mi Salud. The Carlos Slim Foundation would be responsible for translating the app and uploading it to the TELCEL platform.
Slim Initiative in Genomic Medicine
The Slim Initiative in Genomic Medicine was developed to catalyze genomic knowledge in the Mexican population. The work has focused on three areas: diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease. Through a partnership between the Carlos Slim Foundation and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, specific genes, variants, and mutations associated with each of these diseases have been identified, laying the groundwork for developing therapies. The initiative has also provided training for Mexican researchers from various national institutions.
Chagas Vaccine
Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by a parasite that affects over 7 million people worldwide, particularly in highly marginalized and impoverished populations. The parasite typically settles in the heart, causing inflammation that may go unnoticed for years, eventually leading to irreversible damage. This can impair heart function, potentially causing disability or even death.
Vaccination
Vaccination is the most effective public health measure to prevent infectious diseases. For this reason, it is essential for individuals to keep a detailed record of all the vaccines they receive throughout their lives.
Aware of this need, the Carlos Slim Foundation developed the Digital Health Vaccination Ecosystem, an innovative solution that ensures proper tracking of vaccination efforts across the entire life course.
Digital Health in the Prevention and Care of Chronic Diseases
Given the rapid rise in cases of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and chronic kidney disease reported over recent decades, the Carlos Slim Foundation developed a digital health model designed to shift the healthcare paradigm. This model catalyzes a transformation from a reactive, impersonal approach to a proactive and personalized one, capable of combating and reducing the burden of chronic diseases in Mexico.
Digital Health in Maternal and Child Care
Maternal and child health is a crucial component of human development. The habits and care practices adopted before, during, and after pregnancy significantly influence life expectancy and quality of life.
In response to rising cases of obstetric and perinatal conditions, the Carlos Slim Foundation developed and implemented a digital health model to change the healthcare paradigm. The goal is to move from a reactive, impersonal approach to a proactive, personalized model capable of reducing the burden of these conditions in the country.
APPS
The Carlos Slim Foundation believes that new technologies and digital media are essential tools for promoting education, training, and health knowledge. For this reason, we have developed mobile applications that empower people to become active participants in caring for their health and that of their loved ones.
