REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
MESOAMERICA HEALTH INITIATIVE
The initiative is a public-private alliance between the Carlos Slim Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Government of Spain, the IDB and the governments of eight countries in Mesoamerica. Its goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality among women of reproductive age and children under five years living in areas of extreme poverty within the region.
The initiative focuses on the improvement of health care services provided in communities where 20% of the poorest part of the population lives through innovative interventions in maternal and perinatal health, child nutrition and immunizations.
Results
The project benefits 6.5 millones people in the most vulnerable communities of Central America and Chiapas.
181,300 children receive micronutrients. 6,982 women are provided transportation support in order to facilitate access to healthcare during labor and delivery. 1,015 primary health care clinics equipped with the necessary equipment, supplies and drugs.
GLOBAL HEALTH
POLIO ERADICATION
The Carlos Slim Foundation joined the efforts of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, working simultaneously on two fronts: the interruption of the transmission of the wild poliovirus and the reinforcement of routine immunizations.
The contribution of the Carlos Slim Foundation has enabled the purchase of more than 653 million vaccines against polio, benefiting children in 33 countries across Africa and Asia. For the first time in history, in 2016 new cases of polio were found in only three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.

ONCHOCERCIASIS ELIMINATION IN THE AMERICAS
The Elimination of Onchocerciasis throughout the Americas was made possible by a partnership with the Carter Center and the OEPA. This disease is one of the main causes of blindness in adults worldwide. Over the next years, the program will focus on eliminating Onchocerciasis at the border of Venezuela and Brazil, one of the last areas in the region where the disease persists.
Results
More than 376,000 people free of risk of the disease of the Blindness of the Rivers. Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico are free of this disease.
RED
Since 2011, the Carlos Slim Foundation and América Móvil have been part of the Global Fund (RED) initiative that promotes the fight against AIDS and the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children, aiming to reduce the number of babies born with the disease throughout the world, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.
Results
The actions of the Global Fund (RED) have contributed to the reduction from 1,100 births of babies with HIV daily in the world in 2012 to:
900 babies in 2013, 650 in 2014 and 600 in 2015

CLIKISALUD WEBSITE
CLIKIsalud is a website that promotes self-care and the adoption of healthy lifestyles through evidence-based information, and incorporates interactive and educational activities on subjects such as: life line, nutrition, diabetes, obesity, addictions, autism and depression. The material is also intended to facilitate the work of parents, teachers and health promoters. It includes tools such as health calculators and series of videos such as the Salud de Uno (Health of One) clips.

YOUR HEALTH HANDBOOKS
Available at CLIKISalud, the handbooks provide valuable information for the general public to practice good health habits. They are organized by age groups, and are concise, practical guides that cover health at the different stages of life.
The material is updated on a yearly basis and is available on the Línea de Vida (lifeline) link at the CLIKISalud website.

NUTRITION
ATOLE HIM-MAÍZ
In partnership with the Federico Gómez Children’s Hospital of Mexico (HIM), a formula was developed to satisfy the nutritional requirements of expectant and lactating women, as well as for children up to the age of five.
Results
The formula was the basis for the nutritional component of the governmental program Progresa (now called Prospera), which benefits pregnant women and children under 5 years of age, from the more than 6.2 million families that the program currently serves.
NUTRITIOUS CANDY
The candy is distributed in various flavors, supplemented with iron and zinc, as well as other nutrients, to meet the nutritional needs of children, pregnant women and the elderly living in rural towns.
Results
17’361,152 one-kilogram bags of nutritious candy have been distributed.
INTERVENTIONS IN HEALTH
EXTRAMURAL SURGERIES
The program began in collaboration with the Mexican Academy of Surgery and its objective is to provide highly-specialized medical care to the marginalized population of the country, both adults and children, in order to substantially improve their quality of life. The program currently operates in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and several specialized organizations.
Pediatric hand and foot surgery and correction of cleft lip and palate stand out among the surgeries performed under the program.

HEARING AIDS
This program supports people of all ages with limited resources that have hearing impairments of different degrees of severity, in order to improve their quality of life. The program operates on a matching funds system, with the state Integral Family Development (DIF), government agencies, throughout the country.

WHEELCHAIRS
Through a matching fund system, the Telmex- Telcel Foundation works with the state Integral Family Development (DIF) agencies to help people with scarce financial resources and mobility problems, providing aid specially to the ill and the elderly.
