In the event,&nbsp;<strong>Marco Antonio Slim Domit<\/strong>&nbsp;presented\nthe advances and achievements by the <strong>Carlos Slim Foundation <\/strong>(FCS) health\nprograms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before\nofficials of the federal government, state governments, representatives of\ninternational organizations, health ministers of Central American countries,\nformer Secretaries of Health of Mexico and academics,&nbsp;<strong>Marco Antonio\nSlim<\/strong>&nbsp;spoke of the importance of the different stakeholders in society\nworking together. He also mentioned that: \u201c<em>Today\u2019s reality presents us with\nextraordinary solutions that can reach everyone, in fundamental areas such as\neducation and health, essential elements for eradicating one of the worst diseases,\nhopelessness. Without education and health, backwardness and marginalization\nare inevitable. With education and health, there is access to more and better\npossibilities for income and to participate in progress: they are the passport\ntoward wellbeing<\/em>.\u201d said Slim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally he\nreferred to the role of FCS as generator of strategic alliances and catalyst of\npublic policies. He explained how the development models for the Foundation make\nit possible, in alliance with public institutions and other organizations, to bring\nthe digital health revolution to the entire population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cutting\nedge models and developments created by the Foundation have benefited millions\nof people, mainly from the most vulnerable groups, through programs for chronic\nillnesses, maternal and infant health, vaccination, transplants, genomic\nmedicine, health education with the Aprende.org platform, formation of human\ncapital; and others with a global scope in which the Foundation participates,\nlike Mesoamerican Health, the elimination of malaria in Central America and\nCaribbean; and the eradication of polio worldwide; among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nceremony of the 2019 Health Awards began with the delivery of a special\nrecognition to&nbsp;<strong>Guillermo Sober\u00f3n Acevedo<\/strong>, a prestigious academic\nand official of our country.&nbsp;<strong>Roberto Tapia Conyer<\/strong>, general director\nof the Carlos Slim Foundation, presented the moving introduction of Dr.\nSober\u00f3n, who has been distinguished in his professional career as Rector of UNAM\nand Secretary of Health, and who has dedicated many years of his life to\nworking tirelessly for Mexico\u2019s wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterwards,\nDr.&nbsp;<strong>Romeo Rodr\u00edguez Su\u00e1rez<\/strong>, President of the IMSS Foundation and a\nmember of the jury, presented the winners of the <strong>2019 Health Awards<\/strong>, with\nwhich the Carlos Slim Foundation recognizes the work of professionals and\norganizations of excellence, committed to improving the health of the people of\nLatin America. The awards consist of recognition and 100,000 dollars for each\nof the two categories: Exceptional Institution and Research Career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this\ntwelfth edition, the&nbsp;<strong>Instituto Conmemorativo Gorgas de Estudios de la\nSalud <\/strong>was the winner of the award for the&nbsp;Exceptional Institution.\nWith more than 90 years in existence the Gorgas Institute has concentrated its\nwork on scientific research on tropical diseases; it currently has a wide array\nof research areas, which include transmissible and non-transmissible diseases,\nhealth system studies, national surveys and development of new technologies. The\nGorgas Institute is the National Laboratory of Reference of Panam\u00e1 and it\nfunctions as a reference for Central America. It offers diagnostic support and\nopportunities for education and training of scientists in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award\nfor&nbsp;Research Career&nbsp;on this occasion was granted to two\nMexicans:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To\nDr.&nbsp;<strong>Adolfo Mart\u00ednez Palomo<\/strong>, a medical surgeon who graduated from UNAM,\nwith a doctorate in medical sciences and a master\u2019s in science. He is a member\nof&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Colegio_Nacional_(M%C3%A9xico)\">El\nColegio Nacional<\/a>&nbsp;and an emeritus researcher of the National\nResearchers System for his multiple contributions, which include the study of\ninfectious diseases such as amebiasis, giardiasis and onchocerciasis. He has\nwritten five books on amebiasis and other medical topics, and more than 150 scientific\narticles. He is a member of scientific committees of the World Health\nOrganization (WHO), the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Rockefeller Foundation\nand Harvard University, among others. He has received numerous awards and\ndistinctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to\nDr.&nbsp;<strong>Juan \u00c1ngel Rivera Dommarco<\/strong>, who has an undergraduate degree in\nNutrition and Food Sciences from the Universidad Iberoamericana, with a\nmaster\u2019s and doctorate in International Nutrition. He is a researcher and\nacademic of prestigious renown, both nationally and internationally. He has\nproduced around 400 scientific publications, especially in the area of public\nhealth and nutrition, including 228 articles in scientific journals.
