{"id":12615,"date":"2019-07-05T08:49:05","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T13:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/?p=12615"},"modified":"2019-07-05T08:56:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T13:56:11","slug":"carlos-slim-foundation-strengthens-the-alliance-for-the-regional-initiative-for-the-elimination-of-malaria-in-mesoamerica-colombia-and-the-dominican-republic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/carlos-slim-foundation-strengthens-the-alliance-for-the-regional-initiative-for-the-elimination-of-malaria-in-mesoamerica-colombia-and-the-dominican-republic\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlos Slim Foundation strengthens the alliance for the Regional Initiative for the Elimination of Malaria in Mesoamerica, Colombia and the Dominican Republic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Soumaya\nMuseum was the venue of the working meeting of the&nbsp;<strong>Regional Initiative\nfor the Elimination of Malaria<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong>IREM<\/strong>), which was held this past\nJune 12th with the participation of representatives of governments of the <strong>Central\nAmerican countries and Colombia,<\/strong>&nbsp;and of the international\norganizations in the Initiative, such as the<strong> Inter-American Development Bank<\/strong>&nbsp;(IDB)\nand the&nbsp;<strong>Global Fund of the World Health Organization<\/strong>&nbsp;(WHO).\n&nbsp;<strong>Carlos Slim Hel\u00fa<\/strong>&nbsp;and<strong>&nbsp;Marco Antonio Slim Domit<\/strong>&nbsp;led\nthe meeting, since the <strong>Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the leading\norganizations of this important project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Regional\nInitiative for the Elimination of Malaria<\/strong>&nbsp;seeks to support the\ncountries of the region in eliminating the transmission of this disease by the\nyear 2022, and make it the <strong>first region in the world to meet that goal<\/strong>. For\nthis purpose strategic activities will be strengthened that guarantee the\napplication of the timely detection and early treatment methodology proposed by\nthe World Health Organization (WHO), for the elimination of malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>IREM<\/strong>&nbsp;seeks\nto eliminate the risk of contracting malaria for around 19 million people who\nlive in our countries, eliminating around 40 thousand cases annually, which\nhave a serious impact on personal and community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nInitiative has adopted the successful results-based model of the <strong>Mesoamerican\nHealth Initiative,<\/strong>&nbsp;in which the application of funds promotes the\nmobilization of country resources, an important milestone for the\nsustainability of the Initiative, and in which countries receive an economic\nincentive to meet the goals agreed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" <strong>Regional\nInitiative for the Elimination of Malaria<\/strong> is a public-private alliance\nparticipated in by the&nbsp;<strong>governments of the Central American countries<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Colombia<\/strong>&nbsp;and\nthe<strong> Dominican Republic, <\/strong>the <strong>Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>,&nbsp;the <strong>Bill\n&amp; Melinda Gates Foundation<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>Global Fund<\/strong>&nbsp;for the\nfight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria of the WHO, the&nbsp;<strong>Inter-American\nDevelopment Bank<\/strong>, as well as other institutions involved in the struggle\nagainst this disease, such as the <strong>Pan American Health Organization&nbsp;<\/strong>(PAHO),\nthe&nbsp;<strong>Central American Ministries of Health Council<\/strong>&nbsp;(COMISCA),&nbsp;<strong>Clinton\nHealth Access Initiative<\/strong>&nbsp;(CHAI) and the&nbsp;<strong>Mesoamerican\nIntegration and Development Project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants\nin the meeting included Juan Pablo Uribe Restrepo, Health Minister of Colombia;\nRoberto Tapia-Conyer, general director of the Carlos Slim Foundation; the Vice\nMinisters of Health of Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Nicaragua, as well as\nrepresentatives of El Salvador and Honduras; Emma Iriarte, executive secretary\nof the Mesoamerican and Regional Health Initiatives for the Elimination of Malaria;\nAnnelise Hirschmann, regional manager for Latin America and the Caribbean of\nthe Global Fund; Lidia Fromm, executive director of the Mesoamerican Project;\nAlejandro Svarch, general director of International Affairs of the SSA;\nAlejandra Icela Mart\u00ednez of AMEXCID M\u00e9xico, among
