To this end, the\u00a0<strong>Initiative for the Elimination of Malaria in Mesoamerica<\/strong> was approved, a project that wants to prove that this disease can be defeated. The goal is to achieve the elimination of\u00a0<strong>malaria\u00a0<\/strong>in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s partners are convinced that a real solution exists to prevent dozens of thousands of people from suffering from this disease in the region. The<strong> World Health Organization <\/strong>reported 40,277 confirmed cases of\u00a0<strong>malaria\u00a0<\/strong>in Central America, Haiti and the Dominican Republic during 2016. And today, throughout the region there are almost 18.7 million people at risk of contracting the disease.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the aforementioned partners, the Initiative includes the participation of other institutions involved in fighting against this disease in the region, such as the\u00a0<strong>Pan American Health Organization\u00a0<\/strong>(PAHO); the\u00a0<strong>Council of Ministers of Health of Central America\u00a0<\/strong>(COMISCA); the\u00a0<strong>Clinton Health Access Initiative\u00a0<\/strong>(CHAI), and the\u00a0<strong>Mesoamerica Integration and Development Project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12261 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Eliminacion-Malaria.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Eliminacion-Malaria.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Eliminacion-Malaria-600x378.jpg 600w, https:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Eliminacion-Malaria-1024x644.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fundacioncarlosslim.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Eliminacion-Malaria-250x157.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To finance the project, the successful results-based financing model of the\u00a0<strong>Mesoamerica Health Initiative\u00a0<\/strong>(ISM) has been taken as a benchmark, in which the donation of funds promotes the mobilization of resources between countries, representing an important landmark for the sustainability of the Initiative. Furthermore, countries receive an economic incentive if they achieve the established goals.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Initiative for the Elimination of Malaria in Mesoamerica and the Dominican Republic\u00a0<\/strong>has a fund of 53 million dollars, which will be added to almost 30 million dollars of donations from other organizations that fight\u00a0<strong>malaria\u00a0<\/strong>in the region. Additionally, the participating countries are expected to contribute around 50 million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the members of the Initiative are working with the governments of the different involved countries on the preparation of the plans and setting of ambitious -but achievable- goals.
